Duke of Edinburgh Award LogoACHIEVEMENT - CHALLENGE - FUN - LEADERSHIP - EXCITEMENT - NEW SKILLS - ACCREDITATION - SELF CONFIDENCE

What is it?
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a personal development programme for young people aged 14-25. It’s a programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities that offers an individual as well as a team challenge and encourages young people to get involved in exciting, challenging and interesting activities in their spare time.

There are over 40 units running the Award in Warwickshire including schools, youth groups and voluntary organisations. There are also Open Award Groups across the County where any young person can attend.

Park House Youth Centre, Nuneaton
Hill Street Youth Centre, Rugby
Tyler Street Youth Centre, Stratford
Warwick Youth Centre, Warwick

How does it work?
It’s a programme of activities for young people to take part in during their free time; there are three levels of the Award

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold

Gold takes the longest to complete and is generally the biggest challenge, Bronze is the quickest and is usually where young people start, as it takes between 6 months – 1 year to complete.

There are 4 sections to the Award

  • Service
  • Skill
  • Physical Recreation
  • Expedition

Young people choose one activity under each of the headings, for a set period of time (usually 1 hour per week for a minimum of 12 weeks (Bronze). They can do all 4 sections of Award all at the same time, or can do one section after the other; it’s their choice, their decision. There’s no pressure either, as you have until your 25th birthday to complete the Award, even though most young people complete it within one year (depending on which level they are

Why do it?
First of all, it’s a great fun! It’s all about trying something new or improving on existing skills and spending time with their friends. Young people discover how choosing, planning and achieving personal goals can change their life. The Award is nearly 50 years old and is as popular today as when it conceived, over 225,000 young people in the UK are currently doing it.

What’s more, many employers regard the Award as an extra qualification so getting involved in activities that young people enjoy can help their future career as well.
